There are certain moments in photography that stay with you long after the camera is put away.
Meeting Georgia was one of those moments.
I had been invited into her family’s home to photograph their beloved little terrier – a dog who had clearly been deeply loved for many years. Before arriving, I understood that Georgia was dealing with a serious cancer diagnosis. What I did not know was that she only had five days left to live.
When I walked through the door, I never would have guessed it.
Georgia greeted me with energy, curiosity, and the kind of spirit only certain dogs possess. Bright eyes. Constant movement. A little spark that filled the room. Like so many terriers, she carried herself with confidence far bigger than her small frame. I’ve always had an affinity for these little dogs, and Georgia reminded me exactly why.
As the session unfolded, I found myself forgetting entirely that this beautiful animal was living through her final days. She didn’t look fragile. She didn’t seem defeated. She looked vibrant. Alive. Full of personality.
What struck me just as deeply was her family.
In the face of unimaginable heartbreak, they showed incredible courage and love. They invited me into one of the most emotional moments a family can experience — not simply to take photographs, but to preserve the spirit of a companion who had brought them joy, comfort, loyalty, and love for nearly twelve years.
That trust is something I will never take lightly.
Throughout the session, my goal became very clear: to capture Georgia not as a sick dog, but as the strong, beautiful, spirited little creature she truly was. A dog who was adored. A dog who mattered deeply. A dog whose presence changed a home and left an imprint on the people around her.
Even now, I still get emotional thinking about those few hours I was fortunate enough to spend with her during the last week of her life.
People often say we don’t deserve animals. Maybe that’s true. But in this case, I also saw a family whose compassion, care, and devotion reflected the very best parts of being human. Georgia was clearly loved every single day of her life, and she knew it.
I will always feel grateful that I was invited to document those final memories.
And I will always cherish my time with that little bundle of joy named Georgia.
